Long reserved for a handful of in-the-know travelers, surfing in Morocco attracts travelers from all over the world today, beginners and experienced surfers alike. Reliable Atlantic swell, a mild climate year-round, and varied spots around Agadir: here's a guide to understanding why the region has become a surf destination in its own right, and how to plan your trip well.
Why Morocco has become a must-visit surf destination
Morocco's Atlantic coastline gets fairly consistent swell almost year-round, making it one of the rare destinations where you can surf equally well in winter and summer. The climate stays mild and sunny for most of the year, the water never drops to extreme temperatures, and access from Europe is quick — just a few hours' flight to reach Agadir. This combination explains why so many European surfers choose Morocco for a few days' stay or for the whole winter.
Agadir and its surroundings: a range of spots for every level
Around Agadir, the coast packs in a wide variety of spots, from Anza to Taghazout via Tamraght: open beaches ideal for beginners, more technical spots for experienced surfers looking for more shaped waves. This diversity, within a small geographic area, means you can switch spots depending on the weather, the tide, or simply the mood of the day, without having to travel long distances.

Getting started: our tips for a first surf trip
- Go through a certified instructor for your first sessions: reading the waves and staying safe in the water are learned much faster with guidance.
- Don't overestimate your level. A spot suited to beginners is more effective for progressing than a well-known but too-demanding spot.
- Plan for several days if you can: surfing is learned through repetition, and progress is often clearest after three or four consecutive sessions.
- Protect yourself from the sun even on overcast days — long sessions on the water expose you more than you'd think.
What to pack before you go
No need to bring all your gear: on site, boards and wetsuits rent easily by the day, which saves you from traveling with bulky equipment. A 3/2mm wetsuit covers most sessions in the region year-round. Do bring your own swimsuit, water-resistant sunscreen, and a quick-drying microfiber towel for between sessions.
